Battle of The Bollards

Drivers keep moving the temporary bollards at the Oak–Allen diverter in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), a key segment of the AAA bicycle network that has already been been delayed by several years.

Advocates move the bollards back. The city says the bollards should stay. Drivers keep driving through anyway. Here's the story. Good street design removes the need to rely on drivers following the rules of the road. Because they often don't. And don't come at me with a bunch of whataboutism!

"Walk Lights Are Flashing"

The city of Kjipuktuk (Halifax) has started to install more rectangular rapid flashing beacons on crosswalks due to concerns with drivers failing to yield to people crossing. Some also have audio signals for people with visual impairments that say "walk lights are flashing" to signal that they can cross. In this short video from the POV of my bike handlebars I captured the person crossing pressing the button to activate the lights and audio but then having to stop in the crosswalk to avoid being mown down by the driver in the white SUV who failed to yield. If they had been visually impaired they would likely have been struck and injured/killed by this driver. This is #ZeroVisionHFX where drivers face no consequences for their dangerous behaviour.

Flexipost flattening

A fitting end to an underwhelming 2025 on the mean streets of #ZeroVisionHFX. I happened to be walking by as the driver of a large truck pulled into the University Ave bike Lane and flattened the flexiposts on the way. There's a loading bay at the back of the Student Union Building but why bother with that when you can park illegally and crush a few flexiposts too?

The start of my commute was a bit spicy with a container truck driver who didn't seem to know where they were going or what they were doing so just decided to break the law & run over a flexible bollard. Plus a Tesla driver parked in the bike lane too.

A 15 second video from my bicycle camera which shows a large truck pulling out of a side street onto a local street bikeway in Halifax/Kjipuktuk, Canada (July 9 2025). The driver, high up in his cab, clearly cannot see me legally riding along the road that he is turning into. The sound is muted but it is fair to say I yelled. He heard, as indicated by his slight change in road position during his manoeuvre. Such near misses are a regular experience for anyone who tries to move around the city outside of a car.

A short video of a recyling truck driver making an illegal left turn through an intersection that forms part of Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia's supposedly AAA bicycle network. This intersection has signs that restrict drivers from making left or right turns that would conflict with cyclists going straight over to the next inadequate segment of the bike newtork but without physical barriers, drivers continue to do so.

Driver cuts up bus on University Ave, Halifax/Kjipuktuk

There's never a dull moment on my bike commute in Halifax/Kjipuktuk. In this short clip, a driver failed to stop at a stop sign and was almost hit by a bus. The bus driver laid on the horn to express their frustration at this clear example of dangerous driving.

E.T. joins the I Light HFX ride (2022)

The I Light HFX ride is a Critical Mass ride in Kjipuktuk/Halifax where riders celebrate the darker nights and raise awareness and funds for bike lights to be given out to people who need them. It's hosted by the Halifax Cycling Coalition and for the November 2022 ride, I took E.T. out for a spin on my Tern HSD P9 rack.

A video from a cyclist's POV approaching a 4-way intersection of a local street bikeway in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. A driver approaches the intersection from right to left and fails to stop at the Stop sign. It's the summer holidays, otherwise this intersection would have children crossing to reach a local school, as indicated by the Children Crossing sign to the right of the intersection.

The Lights Aren't Working - Crosswalk Edition

Video shows a Canada Post worker push the button to activate the flashing lights at a crosswalk in Kijipuktuk/Halifax. Drivers approaching from either direction ignore or don't notice the flashing lights and blow right through. Both drivers had time to stop. POV is from the bike lane.

Drivers misbehaving (again) - the case for red light cameras

While waiting to cross Quinpool Road to the Vernon Local Street Bikeway (LSB) in Halifax/Kjipuktuk, I witnessed two drivers blowing through a red light. The video clearly shows the drivers who turned onto the LSB proceeding through a red light, while the pedestrian walk sign was activated alongside the green light for traffic going straight. Imagine the revenue if Halifax installed red light cameras?

The Lights aren't working

I came across this interesting stop sign in Halifax/Kjipuktuk which had lights around it, presumably for greater visibility. As I was filming, a truck rolled through the stop sign, nicely illustrating that signs don't work, even if they are lit up like a Christmas tree!
