Street Makeover (segment)

Residential street segment before & during re-construction. Short section of street has clusters of apartments on either side of street and is surrounded by wetland & woods. Most of this street segment has one drive lane going each direction with a narrow bike lane painted on each side. At the intersection with the driveway the street widens and adds a center turn lane. Beyond the apartments, the sidewalk ends on both sides and transfers to a raised wooden walkway over the wetlands. There are trail connectors further along on each side. As the video progresses through subsequent days, there is a scene of a cluster of students waiting for the school bus. The driveways are torn up, with new concrete aprons added. The center turn lane now has two flat concrete pads, shortening the turning space. One of the pads is made into a pedestrian crossing with a “refuge” between the two lanes. Eventually the street is paved and striped (a work still in progress). AND the bike lane shoulders are now wider and do not slant towards the ditches on either side. The smooth pavement is really really nice compared to the bike-eating potholes from before. It’s easy to see why the League of American Wheelmen* started in 1880 to advocate for paved streets >> https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/american-drivers-thank-bicyclists-180960399/ *now the LAB – League of American Bicyclists
