Riding a bike on separated bike paths in Haarlem

Details that make these paths work: • Sometimes the bike pavement is red to identify the bike paths where they are separate from autos and from sidewalks. • The red pavement can continue through a driveway intersection to alert drivers where to yield to people on bikes. (“sharks teeth” & a raised crossing reinforce the safety message) • When the red pavement continues at the same level across an intersection, it creates a slight ramp for cars so drivers slow down when entering a residential street. • Even if the bike path isn’t red, there is a gradual ramp for drivers leading into the residential street. Notes: Haarlem ~ 163,000 people in 11.26 square miles of land More about continuous sidewalks from Jason at Not Just Bikes: Safer Sidewalks - The Dutch solution https://youtu.be/9OfBpQgLXUc
