In North Creek, in the Adirondack area of Upstate New York, specialized 4-wheeled recumbent bicycles are mounted onto old rail lines along the banks of the Hudson River. This far into its headwaters, the river is shallow and walkable -- a mountain stream. August 2025 These rail lines were preserved as a fall-back measure should the local Titanium mining operations ever be restarted. The bike ride is a super-smooth, 8-mile trip along the banks of the Hudson River. It is a pretty neat idea for under-used train lines, but not as accessible to all riders as a regular rail trail. The company that operates these bikes is RevRail.

I asked the operator why they didn't remove the rails and make it into a typical rail-trail. The answer was that they might someday want to reopen the Titanium mines. There are two mines in the area here:: an old industrial garnet mine in North Creek and the Tahawus TiO2 mine, with the former still being in use and accessible by road.
