The notorious Hämeentie (Helsinki) cycle path after a snowstorm (2024-01-18)

We had a major snowstorm in Helsinki today and what better way to celebrate than grab the mountain bike and go out for a ride. The whole city is suddenly a playground with fun obstacles, in the form of both cars and snow. I don't normally use the Hämeentie cycling path, hated probably by both car drivers (because making it took their space away 🤭 😭) but also to some extent cyclists, because it's notorious for both parked cars blocking it and getting really poor maintenance after snow. It's not on my normal routes but today I decided to grab my camera and see exactly how bad it would be after snowfall that had lasted through the night up until the afternoon. Cars or trucks parked on the cycle path: 6 Sections, where the snow had been cleared during the day: 0

@activenashville Oh damn, I hadn't even thought of that possibility. I guess we're lucky here with the drivers. I'm going on a 3 week bikepacking trip in May, to central Europe ,my first longer trip, should probably try and learn to think a bit more defensively before then, no idea how the Germans drive for example..

Thanks!

Interesting, and pretty messy! That section around the 7 minute mark was atrocious.

At the 2 minute mark, when you are next to the truck, I reflexively clenched when you got the green light and proceeded alongside that box truck. I live in the U.S., and I always assume a driver like that is going to turn in front of me, regardless of whether they are signalling to turn, so I hang back a little from the vehicles next to me in case they "right hook" me. And all too often, my fears are realized.

Thanks for the video!
